"Refraction is defined as ‘the change of direction of a ray of light, sound, heat, or the like, in passing obliquely from one medium into another in which its wave velocity is different’. Bearing this definition in mind, and thinking of an exhibition based on something like a Chinese whispers chain (but without the change in meaning or intent that often occurs), we have invited 17 artists to each create a work which is inspired by, and responds to, the work of the artist before them in the chain. Each of the artists has been set a theme to work within (shown in brackets after their name), establishing a point of connection to that of the preceding work. Using this previous artwork as a springboard, what will transpire is a bouncing of ideas, much like how light refracts through glass." Martin and Susie Beaver from Beaver Galleries

This work was made for the inaugural Design Canberra festival and was displayed in the 'Creative Licence' exhibition at Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre. All works in this exhibition had to use the Canberra Centenary Number Plates and speak about Canberra as a designed city. I chose to focus on the aspect of Canberra's design that utilities its natural resources and has kept a very large part of it protected from development. This has earned Canberra's status as a garden city and made it a beautiful place to live in.

These are the graduate pieces from my Honours year of my Bachelor of Visual Arts at the Australian National University. It was in this year I started working with LEDs and glass, looked more closely at the optics of glass and was interested in how chance can help create an artwork.
